Geisha …
the “Art of Seduction!”
Geishas are traditional Japanese artist-entertainers. Geishas were considered works of art. Their elegant performances of traditional Japanese dance, singing, playing instruments such as the three-stringed “shamisen”, the intricate Japanese Tea Ceremony or educated conversation are all achieved with beautiful presentation. They were most popular in the 18th and 19th centuries and are still in existence today, although the numbers are dwindling.
I have a young Japanese friend in Japan, “Ayako” and her friendship has been a gift to me. She is a successful businesswoman and calls me her “American Mammy” and she is my “Japanese Daughter”…she lived with me for several months then going home to Japan and returning over a period of five years. During that time she taught me so much about the Japanese culture. After being apart for twenty years, she came to see me in 2013. The love is still there! I didn’t realize when I painted “Geisha” that she had my Ayako’s beautiful face.
